Mystery Snails are one of the most popular freshwater aquarium snails thanks to their bright colors, peaceful nature, and algae-eating abilities. Available in a variety of colors including gold, blue, jade, ivory, chestnut, purple, and black, these snails are a fun and helpful addition to planted and community aquariums. They are completely safe with healthy live plants and spend their time exploring the tank and cleaning surfaces.

Quick Facts

  • Adult Size: 2–2.5 inches
  • Lifespan: 1–3 years

Mystery Snails are native to slow-moving rivers, streams, ponds, marshes, and wetlands throughout South America, particularly in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina. They are commonly found in areas with abundant aquatic plants, muddy or sandy bottoms, and calm waters. In the wild, they spend their time grazing on algae, biofilm, and decaying plant material while helping keep their environment clean.

Mystery Snails thrive in planted aquariums with driftwood, rocks, and plenty of surfaces to graze on. A secure lid is recommended since they occasionally climb above the waterline.

Mystery Snails are omnivores and scavengers that enjoy:

  • Algae
  • Biofilm
  • Algae wafers
  • Sinking pellets
  • Blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, and green beans
  • Calcium-rich foods

If your aquarium is very clean, supplemental feeding is recommended.

Excellent!

Mystery Snails require both a male and female to reproduce. Females lay large pink or white egg clutches above the waterline, which hatch after about 2–4 weeks if kept warm and humid.

All snails are securely packed with insulated materials and temperature protection when needed. Acclimate slowly upon arrival.
